Lower kitchen cabinets are a pain on the knees. The back of the cabinet becomes the place where you hide the stuff you don’t need to use often or perhaps the stuff you never wanted in the first place! We’ve all received a gift we didn’t need or want, and most of us have kept that gift because we felt guilty. Perhaps you purchased something thinking you needed it or that it would be so helpful and it turns out that it’s not worth the money you paid for it. It’s time for these items to go my friends!
So as you look at organizing your lower cabinets begin by pulling everything out. Give them a deep clean with soap and water, and then while you are letting them dry decide what stays and what goes. If something no longer works toss it! Simplify friends. Do you need it? Do you use it? If not see my post “recycling” on what you can do to give these items a second life. On the reverse side do you love it? Maybe you don’t use it all that often but you love it. Keep it! You don’t have to get rid of everything.
My biggest piece of advice for lower cabinets is to add pull outs. They come in all sorts of sizes and shapes to make your life easier! You can choose from options that screw into your cabinets or ones that just sit inside them. All of the options I’m showing are from The Container Store although you can probably find them at most retailers. This post is all about getting ideas.
These options slide right into your cabinets + are ready to use immediately. Find them by searching “under cabinet pull out drawers.”
These options can be screwed into your cabinets to help save your knees! Find them under “kitchen - cabinet organizers.”
They also sell specialty options like the ones shown above.
The Container Store also offers “starter kits” for those moments where you don’t know where to start or for when you’re just feeling overwhelmed with the options. You can find this one under the “under cabinet pull out drawers” search.
Sometimes though a pull out isn’t necessary. This option is great for under your sink with all those exposed pipes.
It’s expandable + designed to fit around pipes.
Sometimes all you need is basket that you can easily pull out. This option can be screwed into your cabinet or you can keep it free so you can pull the whole thing out to look for storage options.
There are also plenty of options for adding storage to your cabinet doors.
Now perhaps you have some odd shaped cabinets or corner cabinets that you want to find solutions for. The best option for this is Rev-a-Shelf ( https://rev-a-shelf.com ). This company offers more specialty options so they are a great resource if you can’t find what you’re looking for at other retailers.
What’s that?! Your kitchen came with drawers instead of lower cabinets? Well consider yourself blessed. *If you’re considering a kitchen remodel one of my biggest tips is to consider all drawers instead of lower cabinets. See my blog post “kitchen remodels” for the rest of my tips.*
If your deep drawers don’t have built in organization, don’t worry - “plastic Peggy” to the rescue! You can find this Umbra add on at Target ( https://www.target.com ).
Ok I could go on and on forever. This is a start I know, but I’m going to stop here. Remember you don’t have to do it all at once. Pick the thing that drives you the most crazy and start there! And if you need help I’m here.
XOXO, Kylie
