“The ability to simplify means to eliminate the unnecessary so that the necessary may speak.” Hans Hofmann

As you go room by room through your home, you are bound to find many things that no longer serve a purpose for you, and yet are still very useful. They might be completely helpful for someone else. So getting them out of your home and into the hands of another is as much a part of the process as deciding to get rid of them in the first place. Below I’ve compiled a few suggestions about what to do with the things you no longer find necessary.

It may be time to replace something large like your refrigerator, old toilets or maybe your bathroom vanity. If these items are still working, or are still in good condition, you could consider donating them to Habitat for Humanity ReStores, and then writing them off in your taxes. In most cases they will even pick up big items for you in case you are unable to move them yourself. Here is everything you need to know to donate to them: https://www.habitat.org/restores/donate-goods

Now they won’t take everything so another great option to consider is selling them on sites like Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist. In many cases you can get cash for things like kitchen cabinets, and in some cases the buyer will come to remove them for you. Just be up front with what you are willing to do, and what you want them to do. Clear expectations ensure things run smoothly.

When it comes to smaller items, like say plastic bins you no longer need, or clothes, old plates, or other old home items, a great option is the Goodwill. Here is a list of everything that Goodwill accepts for donations: https://www.amazinggoodwill.com/donating/donor-guidelines

One thing the Goodwill will not take is old electronics. Here is a guide on how to recycle these items: https://www.epa.gov/recycle/electronics-donation-and-recycling

Of course there are options that are unique to your area as well. A simple google search will help you find a solution close to home.

No matter which option you decide to use recycling items will help give them a second life and keep things out of our landfills. Win win!
